The Science behind Mushroom Guru's MG-LZ8™ Reishi Extract

What makes MG-LZ8™ different

Craig Fourie spent decades cultivating mushrooms before turning his full attention to a single species - Ganoderma sichuanense, the Reishi mushroom known in Chinese medicine as the mushroom of immortality. Over 13 years, that focus became a methodology. The
methodology an extract: MG-LZ8™ and after years of independent laboratory testing,
MG-LZ8™ now represents a deeply important milestone in Mushroom Guru’s Reishi journey.

Some Reishi supplements are of ground fruiting body powder more macronutrient-based — dried mushroom material that naturally contain lower concentrations of certain bioactive compounds compared to concentrated extracts due to the raw material going through extractive processes. These formulations are typically used for general nutritional support and wellness applications, rather than more targeted extract-based approaches.

MG-LZ8™ extracts go through a strict criteria at every stage of production to ensure that a concentrate formulation dose is encapsulated and or suspended

  1. Species confirmation: The source culture has been genetically confirmed as Ganoderma sichuanense Zhao & Zhang (also known as G. lingzhi) using dual-marker genomic sequencing by Inqaba Biotechnical Industries. This is considered a highly reliable method for accurate species identification.
  2. Growth form (antler morphology): The mushroom is cultivated under elevated CO₂ conditions, encouraging it to grow in a branched “antler-like” form rather than the typical flat cap. HPLC analysis indicates this growth form contains up to 12× higher concentrations of key compounds compared to standard conk-shaped Reishi, where these compounds are more diluted.
  3. Extraction process: A dual-phase extraction method is used, combining both alcohol (ethanolic) and water-based extraction steps. This allows for the capture of both fat-soluble compounds (triterpenoids) and water-soluble compounds (beta-glucans) in a single process. Compared to a standard Reishi powder, the final extract shows a 348× overall concentration multiplier with no detectable starch.

The growing evidence

The immunological activity of MG-LZ8™ was evaluated in a pre-clinical study conducted at the University of Louisville under the supervision of Prof. Vaclav Větvička, Head of the Department of Pathology. Key findings include (for the scientifically curious):

  • +51.7% increase in phagocytosing neutrophils at 100μg/24hr (baseline 31.1% → 47.2%).
  • Phagocytosis is the primary mechanism by which the immune system clears cellular debris, pathogens, and damaged tissue.
  • 238× IL-2 upregulation at 100μg. Interleukin-2 is the key cytokine coordinating the T-cell immune response.
  • Zero cytotoxicity confirmed across all cancer cell lines at 48 hours.

These findings originate from a peer-reviewed pre-clinical study conducted by an independent accredited institution.

Compound profile (triterpenoids):
Advanced MS/QTOF analysis conducted at the Central Analytical Facility, Stellenbosch University identified 15 triterpenoid compounds in MG-LZ8™, including Ganoderic Acids A, B, D, H, C2, and Ganoderenic Acid B.

At a key analytical point (RT 32.17), Ganoderic Acids A and B make up 8.07% of the extract, compared to 0.14% in a standard industry benchmark. This represents a 57-fold higher concentration at this specific biologically significant compound position.

Glyconutrient profile:
Analysis also confirmed the presence of five key glyconutrients identified by Dr Steve Nugent — mannose, fucose, xylose, glucose, and galactose — within the polysaccharide fraction of MG-LZ8™.

Purity and safety

Independent testing by Mérieux NutriSciences confirmed: starch below the limit of quantification (effectively zero), heavy metals fully compliant, zero pathogens detected. The product contains no grain filler, no mycelium-on-grain substrate material, and no undeclared additives.

MG-LZ8™ was developed for those looking for targeted Reishi products and the evolving science surrounding fungal compounds and extraction methods.

Whether you are already familiar with Reishi or simply beginning to explore the world of medicinal mushrooms, MG-LZ8™ represents a a fully traceable locally produced South African-developed approach using modern cultivation, extraction, and analytical techniques.
