Indigenous African Oils and Butters - The Manna and Me System

Indigenous African Oils and Butters - The Manna and Me System

At Manna and Me, ingredients are selected for how they function within the skin barrier - not for trend, texture, or botanical appeal alone. As a barrier-first skincare brand, the focus is on supporting sensitive, reactive, and environmentally exposed skin through protection, nourishment, balance, and recovery.

Within this framework, indigenous African botanicals and locally sourced
plant oils form a core part of the formulation philosophy - functional elements
within a structured skin support system. Indigenous botanicals (calming & recovery support)

  • Helichrysum (Impepho) is used to support skin that feels stressed,
reactive, or environmentally overloaded. It is integrated into formulation
of our Healing Balm where the focus is on comfort and recovery after
    exposure or irritation.
  • Devil’s Claw is included in our Face Serum and Face Cream for its role in
supporting compromised or imbalanced skin states, particularly where
    calm and restoration are needed.
  • Rose Geranium contributes to overall skin balance in our Face & Hair Oil,
helping maintain a sense of stability in reactive or shifting skin
    conditions.
  • Sour Fig (Carpobrotus), is a coastal indigenous succulent that helps
support skin hydration balance, comfort, and resilience. It is used across
multiple Manna and Me formulations, including the cleanser, lotion,
    barrier cream, and face cream.

African plant oils and butters (nourishment & barrier support) Manna and Me uses a combination of African plant oils and butters to support barrier function through lightweight nourishment, deeper replenishment, and structural skin protection. Marula, Moringa, Baobab, Kalahari Melon Seed, Shea, and Mango Butter each play distinct roles within this system - from fast-absorbing daily hydration to richer barrier reinforcement for drier or more exposed skin states.

Marula and Kalahari Melon Seed oils form the lightweight base of daily nourishment, supporting hydration and skin flexibility without heaviness or congestion. Moringa and Baobab extend this support into more nutrient-dense replenishment, particularly where skin is affected by environmental stress or depletion. Shea and Mango Butters provide the structural layer of the system, reinforcing the skin barrier and helping reduce moisture loss while maintaining comfort and spreadability across daily-use formulations. Together, these ingredients create a layered nourishment system designed to support the skin across different climates, conditions, and levels of exposure.

How these ingredients work together

These botanicals, oils, and butters are not used in isolation, but as part of a layered barrier-support system. Each group of ingredients plays a defined role - from calming and recovery support, to daily nourishment and structural barrier reinforcement - working together to support skin across different environments and conditions.

This creates formulations built around functional relationships between ingredients, rather than single hero actives. Skin food as functional logic In this system, ingredients are understood as skin food - not as a metaphor, but as a way of describing how botanical components function within the skin barrier. Each ingredient is selected based on how it supports the skin in real conditions of exposure, movement, and environmental change. The result is skincare that is simple in structure, but intentional in function  designed to support the skin as it moves through everyday life.
