Spekboom – the sustainable skincare powerhouse

Spekboom – the sustainable skincare powerhouse

By Sonja Borodin-Sleigh

While researching local plants that could be effective for a skin soothing lotion, I became
increasingly drawn to the Spekboom plant and the great healing properties it offers. I
started experimenting with making extracts and loved the results. Interestingly, the acidity
of the leaves changes during the day – apparently a defence mechanism in the wild to
prevent over-grazing. I discovered that harvesting the leaves is best done early morning to
create the best skin friendly pH profile.

Native to South Africa, Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) is a resilient succulent increasingly
valued in modern skincare for its soothing, antioxidant-rich properties. Traditionally used for
skin irritations and minor wounds, Spekboom contains naturally occurring antioxidants,
phenolic compounds, and moisture-binding nutrients that help support healthy-looking skin.
In skincare formulations,

Spekboom is prized for its ability to help calm stressed or sensitised skin while supporting hydration and skin barrier function. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity may help protect the skin from environmental stressors and premature ageing, making it well suited to moisturisers, serums, masks, and after-sun products.

Beyond its skin benefits, Spekboom also carries a strong sustainability story. As an
indigenous South African plant known for its exceptional carbon-sequestering ability and
drought resistance, it aligns beautifully with eco-conscious and naturally derived skincare
concepts.
