Shweshwe originated as indigo cloth introduced to Southern African through early trade and European settlement. Over time, this distinctive printed cotton became embedded in traditional dress and daily life, particularly in the Eastern Cape.
Original Three Cats Shweshwe is produced exclusively by Da Gama Textiles in Zwelitsha, Eastern Cape, which acquired the rights to the Three Cats design in 1992. Production continues to reply on engraved copper rollers and a traditional discharge-printing process, preserving the fabric’s original character.
Genuine Shweshwe is 100% cotton, distinguished by a crisp, structured finish when new that softens with washing while retaining its color and pattern integrity. Authenticity is verified by the Three Cats back stamp.
